About the Rosemary Brown Racial Justice Awards
Formerly the J.S. Woodsworth Human Rights and Equity Awards, these awards commemorate the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (March 21), which marks the Sharpeville massacres in South Africa over 60 years ago—an important milestone in the struggle against apartheid.
Named for Rosemary Brown, the first Black woman elected to a Canadian provincial legislature and the first to seek federal party leadership, the Awards honor her lifelong commitment to fighting sexism, racism, and poverty. Brown’s legacy extends internationally, where she championed women’s political, economic, and social empowerment in developing nations.
